Royal Veterinary College (RVC) (https://library.rvc.ac.uk/) has chosen Koha as its new library management system, to replace the previous Sirsi Dynix Symphony system. The college has also implemented Aspen Discovery as the library portal to their resources.
PTFS Europe has implemented the new systems and will provide ongoing hosting and support services to the college to ensure its success in supporting these collections into the future.
Koha Library Management System
With over 15,000 systems worldwide, Koha is one of the most widely used library management systems (LMS) in the world. Koha is entirely web-based for both staff and public functions. This helps make the system light, easy to use, easy to deploy and easy to manage.
Koha’s impressive feature set continues to evolve and expand to meet the needs of its user base. It includes modules for circulation, cataloguing, acquisitions, serials, course reserves, user management, interlibrary loans, and more.
Aspen Discovery
Designed around the users’ browsing experience, this open source and highly featured discovery tool integrates the library catalogue, e-content, photographic libraries, websites, open access databases and more, bringing all library resources together via a single search.
Aspen Discovery provides complete integration with an organisation’s underlying library management system and eContent Providers while also offering administrators a high degree of custom configuration.
The library can create curated collections, placards and collection spotlights to highlight specific areas of interest and direct the users to additional resources. In addition to all of this, Aspen Discovery also offers web builder functionality which allows the library to use the system to easily create their own web presence.
Louise Avie, Library Resources Manager at RVC said:
“After researching various systems we chose Koha because it’s open source, has wide-ranging functionality, a customisable and easy to use staff interface, plus extensive reporting.
We opted for the Aspen Discovery OPAC with the aim of exploiting the array of customisation options and features to make eResources more discoverable and improve user experience and engagement. Initial feedback has been very positive – we are excited to see how this progresses.”
Sam Goldsmith, Business Development Manager at PTFS Europe said:
“We are delighted to be working with RVC. Their Koha LMS will be providing excellent back office library support for staff whilst Aspen brings a colourful and engaging portal to their students. The combination of Aspen and Koha really brings the library service to the forefront of the student experience.”
